Spotlight On: Sustainable Music Initiatives

In the rapidly evolving world of music and media, Universal Production Music has taken a proactive approach to music and sustainability by launching the groundbreaking Green Production Music Initiative.

Hear from key figures from Universal Production Music and the companies involved in this collaborative effort about their role in reducing the environmental impact of music production.

Universal Production Music's Vision for Eco-Friendly Music Production.

The Green Production Music Initiative, led by Universal Production Music, is a comprehensive program that inspires and empowers an extensive network of composers, producers, and engineers to adopt eco-friendly practices in their music production processes, demonstrating the harmonious relationship between music and sustainability.

Universal Production Music provides detailed guidance, resources, and support to its suppliers. This enables them to create captivating and environmentally responsible music that resonates with audiences while minimising the impact on the planet.

Geoff Cox, Senior Director of Global Repertoire at Universal Production Music shares the story behind the initiative's inception:

"This initiative was born from a client request some two and a half years ago who asked if we had green music. Having absolutely no idea what this was, we embarked on a journey to understand how we could go about providing a green music offering to our clients."

Partnering with Pilio for Sustainable Guidelines

Universal Production Music partnered with Pilio, a renowned energy and environmental innovation company, to bring this vision to life. Together, they developed a set of "Go Green Guidelines'' and established a framework for producing carbon-conscious music.

The guidelines focus on key areas such as energy consumption, travel, resource management, and more, providing practical, actionable steps for suppliers to minimise their environmental footprint. Geoff explains:

"It was critical for us to do this initiative properly and with the guidance of professionals in this space. Pilio provided us with a science-based approach to understanding why we are in a climate emergency. We then looked at our business to understand where the opportunities were to deliver a project with green practices."

Engaging Suppliers and Curating Green Production Music

The initial phase of the Green Music Initiative involves engaging Universal Production Music's network of suppliers through a comprehensive survey. Suppliers are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to adopt sustainable practices. This helps strengthen the bond between music and sustainability.

Universal Production Music has curated a dedicated catalogue of green tracks, aptly named Green Production Music, by identifying composers who can produce music in an eco-friendly way.

Geoff emphasises the importance of renewable energy in Universal Production Music’s supplier practices, as well as their guidance on various aspects of sustainability:

"The most important step is for the supplier to have a 100% renewable energy electricity provider. We then provide information on a range of areas, including travel, heating, cloud storage, purchasing goods, space for nature, and advocacy.”

Virtual Sound's Approach to Music and Sustainability

Universal Production Music's commitment to music and sustainability extends to its partnership with Virtual Sound, an eco-friendly audio production company. By employing hybrid workflows and remote collaboration tools, Virtual Sound significantly reduces the need for travel and the associated carbon emissions of traditional studio sessions.

Holly Abey, Head of Growth & Sustainability at Virtual Sound, shared her insights on the partnership:

"The most important aspect of this is not travelling to sessions in studio facilities. At Virtual Sound, we have a well-established hybrid workflow for all recording and mix work, which means that our agency and brand clients don't have to travel to studios to record artists, voiceovers, or oversee sound design."

Virtual Sound's approach also includes using renewable energy sources and energy-efficient equipment, demonstrating that high-quality audio production can minimise environmental impact.

The Ripple Effect of the Green Production Music Initiative

Of course, implementing sustainable practices within the music production process presents its own challenges. Thankfully, Universal Production Music has found success in the enthusiastic support from its composers and artists.

Geoff highlighted the positive feedback:

"The most rewarding part has been the buy-in from some of our composers and artists who care passionately about the environment and want to do their bit in tackling climate change but had previously not had the understanding or knowledge to take action."

Green Production Music Initiative has inspired its network of suppliers and caught the attention of the wider industry. By showcasing the feasibility and benefits of combining music and sustainability in production practices, Universal Production Music is leading by example and encouraging other companies to follow suit.

Speaking on future prospects, Geoff said: "Now we've launched Green Production Music to our clients, we hope to see others follow. We've already had a number of partners keen to adopt the green practices we've been using, and we’re hoping this will start a snowball effect across the industry to start thinking about how they can produce music in a green way."

Amplifying Impact through Carbon Offset Programmes

Universal Production Music's commitment to sustainability is further supported by the partnership between Virtual Sound and Earthly, a company that helps businesses contribute to certified carbon offset programmes worldwide. Through this partnership, Universal Production Music's clients can avoid and reduce emissions, further amplifying the positive impact of their sustainable music initiatives.

Earthly's involvement adds another environmental responsibility to the Green Production Music Initiative. Universal Production Music and their clients can actively contribute to carbon sequestration and the restoration of vital ecosystems by supporting certified carbon offset projects, such as mangrove planting in Madagascar and seaweed farming in the UK.

Paving the Way for a Greener Future in Music

As the music and media industries continue to grapple with the challenges posed by climate change, projects like the Green Production Music Initiative serve as a beacon of hope and a model for change. By demonstrating the viability and advantages of integrating music and sustainability in production practices, Universal Production Music reduces its environmental impact and paves the way for a greener future in the creative sectors.

The success of the Green Production Music Initiative relies on the commitment of Universal Production Music and its partners and on the active participation of its network of composers and artists. These talented individuals are playing a crucial role in shaping the future of the music industry by embracing eco-friendly practices and incorporating sustainability into their creative works.

From using renewable energy sources in their studios to experimenting with innovative, low-impact instruments and recording techniques, Universal Production Music's green composers are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in sustainable music production. Their efforts result in captivating, environmentally responsible music that inspires others in the industry.

Expanding Reach and Impact

As the Green Production Music Initiative continues to grow and evolve, Universal Production Music remains committed to expanding its reach and impact:"Our vision is to establish a green music process in all our territories and long term to be able to onboard all our suppliers to the initiative.”

To achieve this ambitious goal, Universal Production Music will continue to work closely with its partners, including Pilio, Virtual Sound, and Earthly, to refine its guidelines, develop new resources, and support its network of suppliers in their sustainability journey.

By fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and environmental responsibility, Universal Production Music is laying the foundation for a greener future in the music industry, where music and sustainability go hand in hand.

A Call to Action for the Music Industry

Initiatives like Green Production Music, which seamlessly integrates music and sustainability, have potential impacts far beyond the music and media sectors.

The collective efforts can contribute significantly to the global fight against climate change as more companies across various industries recognise the importance of sustainability and take action to reduce their environmental footprint.

Universal Production Music and their partners are not only inspiring change within their industry but also demonstrating to the wider business community that it is possible to balance economic success with environmental responsibility by showcasing the feasibility and benefits of sustainable practices.

As consumers become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their choices, the demand for sustainable products and services is likely to grow. Universal Production Music and their green composers are meeting their clients' evolving needs and setting themselves apart in a competitive industry by positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable music production.

Reflecting on the influence of their initiative, Geoff stated:

"We've already had several partners keen to adopt the green practices we've been using, and we’re hoping this will start a snowball effect across the industry to start thinking about how they can produce music in a green way."

In a world increasingly focused on environmental responsibility, initiatives like this are powerful reminders that every industry can contribute to transitioning to a more sustainable future.
